WHY FINISHING MATTERS

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRINTED AND FINISHED

3D print finishing (post-processing) is everything done to a part after printing — sanding, priming, painting, coating and detailing — to remove layer lines and turn it into a finished, market-ready product. At Robust3D, we handle this in-house at our Dubai facility, applying custom paint, surface treatments and protective coatings matched to your application — from matte to metallic, functional to showroom-ready — with nothing outsourced along the way.

FINISHING DEFINES HOW A PART LOOKS, FEELS & PERFORMS

The surface finish of a 3D-printed part defines its look, feel, durability and real-world usability. A part destined for a trade show display has different requirements than one built for outdoor signage or an automotive interior.

Whether you need a prototype for client presentation, a retail-ready product, or a functional part that has to survive UAE heat and sun, our finishing services take your parts from raw to refined — without compromising the tight tolerances they were printed to, and without unpredictable turnaround.

Getting this stage right is often what determines whether a part is ready to ship to a client or still looks like a prototype.

OUR CAPABILITIES

PAINT & FINISHING CAPABILITIES

Every finish starts with the material, geometry and end use. Our technicians select the right preparation, paint and protection system for the result you need.
3D printed part surface smoothing and preparation
01

Surface Smoothing & Preparation

We remove layer lines, bumps, and imperfections through sanding, vapor polishing or media blasting, creating a smooth, consistent surface ready for paint or coating. This step is the foundation of every finish — skipping it is the most common reason a paint job looks unprofessional, and our technicians select the right method based on your part's material and geometry.

Custom paint and color matching for a 3D printed part
02

Custom Paint & Color Matching

Choose any RAL, Pantone, or metallic shade, and we'll match it precisely. Our team delivers uniform texture and professional-grade coatings across matte, satin, gloss and metallic finishes, so your part matches your brand or design intent exactly — not approximately. Color consistency is checked across every part in a batch.

Texture and surface effects on finished 3D printed parts
03

Textures & Effects

From matte and satin to glossy and rubberized finishes, we add tactile appeal and visual distinction to every piece. This is where a part stops looking “3D printed” and starts looking manufactured — useful for client-facing, retail-facing, or presentation-ready work.

Protective coating applied to a 3D printed part
04

Protective Coatings

For parts that need to perform, not just look good, we offer UV-resistant, waterproof, chemical-resistant, and anti-corrosive coatings that extend service life in demanding environments — outdoor signage, automotive components, and industrial applications included.

Branding and detailed finishing work on a 3D printed part
05

Branding & Detail Work

Add logos, decals, fine patterns, or multi-color detailing with precision masking and layering. This is the step that turns a generic finished part into a branded, production-grade product ready to represent your business, and it's typically the last stage before final inspection.

OUR PROCESS

A CONSISTENT, STAGED FINISHING PROCESS

Every part follows the same controlled sequence so quality and turnaround stay predictable, no matter the size or complexity of the job.
01

Inspection & Assessment

We review the printed part and confirm the best finishing route for its material, geometry, and end use before any work begins.

02

Surface Preparation

Sanding, vapor polishing, or media blasting removes layer lines and creates an even base for everything that follows.

03

Priming

A primer layer improves paint adhesion and durability, and evens out surface tone before color is applied.

04

Custom Paint Application

RAL, Pantone, or metallic color is applied by hand or spray for a uniform, professional finish across the full part.

05

Curing & Quality Check

Parts are cured fully and inspected against your specification before moving forward to the next stage.

06

Protective Coating & Detailing

Where required, UV, waterproof or anti-corrosive coatings and any branding or detail work are added as the final step before delivery.

MATERIAL EXPERTISE

MATERIALS WE FINISH

We finish parts printed in the most common industrial 3D printing materials, including FDM thermoplastics, SLA resins, and SLS nylon powders. Each material behaves differently under sanding, priming, and paint, so our technicians adjust technique and prep time accordingly.

Resin parts, for example, typically need less aggressive smoothing than FDM parts with visible layer lines, while SLS nylon parts often go straight to media blasting for an even matte base. If you're unsure which material your part is printed in, or which finish will work best, send us the file or the part itself and we'll advise before quoting.

Finished FDM, SLA and SLS 3D printed parts
FDM

FDM Thermoplastics

Visible layer lines often need more deliberate smoothing and priming before paint, especially on client-facing surfaces.

SLA

SLA Resins

Resin surfaces are already fine-detailed and typically need less aggressive smoothing before primer and color.

SLS

SLS Nylon Powders

Media blasting is often used to create a uniform matte base before additional color, coating or detailing.

APPLICATIONS

FINISHING FOR EVERY INDUSTRY

Different industries need different finishes, and we tailor our approach accordingly. Our finishing process adapts to the application — not the other way around.
01

ROBUST3D STANDARD

QUALITY, TURNAROUND & TRANSPARENT PRICING

Finishing is part of the engineering process — not an afterthought. We protect tolerance, confirm the route before work starts and quote every project clearly in AED.
01

Tolerance-Aware Finishing

Every finished part goes through the same quality checks we apply to our printing and engineering work — tight tolerances are respected throughout the finishing process, not just during printing.

02

Clear AED Quotes

We quote every project in AED with a clear breakdown of technique and timeline, so there are no surprises between your initial enquiry and final delivery.

03

Technique-Based Turnaround

Single-step treatments like sanding or a straightforward paint job move faster than multi-stage jobs combining protective coatings, custom color matching and detail work.

04

Batch Consistency

For production runs, we confirm batch consistency checks upfront, so every unit in an order matches the approved sample on color, texture, and finish.

05

Sample Approval Available

For larger or color-critical runs, we can finish a single sample part first so you can approve the color, texture and finish before the full batch proceeds.

06

Parts Printed Elsewhere

We also finish parts produced elsewhere. Send us the part and finishing brief and we'll assess the preparation needed before finishing begins.

Share your part files and finishing brief, and we'll confirm both a timeline and an AED quote before work begins.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is post-processing in 3D printing?
Post-processing covers every treatment applied after a part is printed — sanding, priming, painting, coating and detailing — to remove layer lines and prepare the part for its final use, whether that's display, assembly or outdoor deployment.
Can you match a specific RAL or Pantone color?
Yes. We match any RAL, Pantone or custom metallic shade in-house, so the finished part aligns exactly with your brand guidelines or design reference rather than an approximate color.
How long does paint and finishing typically take?
Turnaround depends on the technique and part complexity — a straightforward sanding-and-paint job moves faster than a multi-stage process involving protective coatings and detailing. Share your part and finish requirements and we'll confirm a timeline with your AED quote.
Do you offer weatherproof or UV-resistant coatings?
Yes. We apply UV-resistant, waterproof and anti-corrosive coatings for parts that need to perform outdoors or in demanding environments, including signage, automotive and industrial applications common across the UAE.
What's the difference between sanding, sandblasting and vapor polishing?
Sanding is a manual, controllable way to remove layer lines and prep a surface for paint. Sandblasting (media blasting) creates a fast, uniform matte texture across the whole part. Vapor polishing chemically smooths the surface for a glossier, more refined finish. We recommend the right method based on your material and end goal.
Can finishing be applied to any 3D printed material?
Most FDM, SLA and SLS printed materials can be finished, though the best technique varies by material and part geometry. Send us your part details and we'll recommend the right process during your quote.
Do finishing services affect the part's dimensional tolerances?
No — we account for tolerance requirements throughout the finishing process, so functional fit and precision are preserved even after sanding, coating or painting.
Can you finish parts printed elsewhere, not just ones you've printed for us?
Yes. While most of our finishing work follows on from parts we've printed in-house, we also finish parts produced elsewhere — send us the part and your finishing brief and we'll assess the best approach and confirm whether any additional prep is needed before finishing begins.
Do you offer sample or test finishes before committing to a full production run?
For larger or color-critical production runs, we can finish a single sample part first so you can approve the color, texture, and finish before we proceed with the rest of the batch — particularly useful for branded or client-facing products.
